Red Jade

For centuries, Chinese green tea was the only tea - green the color of the leaves, and clear jade the character of the brew.  A legendary "mistake" led to the development of hong cha - red tea, which was sold to Europeans who called it "black tea".  But making tea of one type or another is not as simple as applying certain production steps.  Teas are cultivated over many years to bring out the best flavor for particular types of tea.

So it was with "Ruby 18", the famous Taiwan tea cultivar that led the charge in the development of Taiwan loose leaf black tea.  The Chinese name for this cultivar is hong yu - Red Jade, for the color of the brew.

Our Red Jade offers an aroma of caramelized sweet potato, with flavor notes of burnt caramel, persimmon and spiced mulled fruit.  You can feel the forests of Taiwan in the cup, and be transported there as you sip.
