Genmaicha was originally created at the Tea Shop Horaido, in Kyoto, Japan. This tea shop was established in 1803, but Genmaicha didn’t come onto the scene until 1922. The tea master of Horaido was inspired by the Cha-Kaiseki meal, which is a full course meal served at formal tea ceremonies, known in Japan as Chanoyu. Traditionally, at the end of the meal after the last course, hot water is served with roasted rice added. The tea master at Horaido sought to replicate the taste and aroma of the water and roasted rice, giving birth to Genmaicha, “brown rice tea”.
We sourced this Genmaicha green tea directly from Tea Shop Horaido. Roasted brown rice is mixed into the green tea grown in the famous Uji tea producing region. The tea is hearty and savory with a pleasant aroma of roasted rice.
